Located in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Son Doong Cave lies within the oldest limestone mountain range in Asia, dating back 400–450 million years. Using advanced fossil sediment analysis, geologists have determined that Son Doong Cave was formed 3–4 million years ago.

Nestled in a fault zone of the majestic Truong Son Mountain Range, the cave was gradually carved out by the Rao Thuong River, creating a massive underground tunnel hidden beneath dense limestone mountains. Over time, parts of the cave’s ceiling collapsed, forming gigantic skylights that open up to the outside world.

On December 10, 1990, a local farmer named Ho Khanh first discovered the cave while trekking through the forest but lost track of its location. After multiple attempts to rediscover it, and with the assistance of British cave experts, the cave was finally re-explored in 2009 and officially declared the largest natural cave in the world by the Vietnam-British cave exploration team.

With an estimated volume of 28.5 million cubic meters, length of 9 km, width over 150 m, and height exceeding 200 m, along with a network of more than 350 connecting caves, underground rivers, and lakes, Son Doong Cave is a true natural wonder. In 2013, Guinness World Records officially recognized Son Doong as the world’s largest cave.

Best Time to Visit Son Doong Cave

The Son Doong expedition is influenced not only by the weather in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park but also by the unique microclimate inside the cave. Son Doong travel experience – prepare physically

When you book a tour, medical professionals will ask questions about your health, so you must answer honestly. Because that is the guarantee of your safety during the trip.

What to Prepare Before Your Son Doong Cave Expedition

Physical Training and Health Requirements

Exploring Son Doong Cave requires excellent physical fitness to handle the real challenges of cave trekking. If you join the tour but fail to meet the necessary health and fitness conditions to complete the expedition, you will be escorted back to the starting point without a refund.

To prepare, you should:

  • Walk at least 10 km per day
  • Climb 3 floors per session, completing 15 climbs per day without heavy breathing

Essential Items to Pack

  • 1–2 sets of short-sleeve shirts and pants for relaxing and camping

Footwear

  • 1 pair of hiking shoes with good grip and a simple design to avoid snagging on branches
