Exploring Domaine De Marie Church in Dalat

Long-standing History

The church was constructed from 1940 to 1944, initiated by the then Governor-General of French Indochina, Jean Decoux’s wife, who mobilized parishioners for contributions. Previously, Domaine De Marie Church served as the main convent of the Vinh Son Sisters of Mercy from 1940 to 1943. After 1975, alongside the main church and two convent wings, additional facilities were built here to serve public purposes.

The church has a spacious courtyard adorned with numerous flowers, grass, and trees

The church nurtured many orphaned children and provided education in weaving, embroidery, and painting. Behind the church lies the grave of Madame Jean Decoux, commemorating her contribution to the church’s construction and fulfilling her wish. Madame Decoux passed away in a car accident on Prenn Pass in 1944 during a trip from Saigon to Dalat.

Distinctive Architecture of Domaine De Marie Church, Dalat

The first impression of Domaine De Marie Church is its distinctive European architectural style, situated on a spacious area of 12 hectares. A surprising detail is that the church doesn’t use cement but instead employs various natural binding agents such as lime, molasses, and stone walls chiseled up to the window sills.

Compared to classical Western churches, Domaine De Marie incorporates more modern elements. For example, while still maintaining a cruciform plan, it offers more freedom in proportions, measuring 11m wide and 33m long, with two stairways leading to the main entrance and exit at the main hall.

The distinctive pink color is the main attraction drawing tourists to Domaine De Marie Church

Stepping into the church grounds, visitors can admire a variety of flowers, especially hydrangeas. The forecourt is triangular, with a pointed roof adorned with a cross and small vaulted doors in front. In the center, near the roof peak, is a round rose window – a detail commonly found in French churches in the late 17th century.

The roof of Domaine De Marie Church resembles the longhouse roofs of the Central Highlands’ ethnic groups, with a considerable slope and red tiles produced in Vietnam. The projecting roof windows serve not only as places for stained glass from France but also illuminate the space better, adding to the church’s brilliance.

The walls are built in the Normandy architectural style with stone walls chiseled up to the window sills. The church maintains its characteristic deep pink color since its completion. Initially lacking a bell tower, Domaine De Marie Church now has one built directly behind the sanctuary.

The statue of Mother Mary standing on top of the globe symbolizes Domaine De Marie Church

Unlike the Chicken Church, the front of Domaine De Marie Church is designed in a triangular shape with a cross symbol atop. In front of the church, a round window resembling a rose decorates the facade, while triangular windows on either side of the church’s peak allow more light into the interior space.

Inside the church stands a statue of Mother Mary on a globe, designed by French architect Jonchère in the image of Vietnamese women in 1943. The statue, weighing 3 tons and standing 1 ton, was donated by Madame Decoux, the Governor-General of French Indochina.

The Church is a Home to Many Orphaned Children

Initially, Domaine De Marie Church was the main convent for over 50 nuns. They engaged in various social activities such as running nurseries, orphanages, etc. Although the main order has relocated to Ho Chi Minh City, the church continues to uphold its mission of helping the poor. For example, by operating care centers for orphans, the developmentally delayed, providing medical care for the poor, and operating free vocational training centers.

In addition to the main church and two convent wings, other facilities are now used for public activities. Visitors, besides choosing local Dalat specialties as souvenirs, can also purchase souvenirs made by orphaned children or help poor children at the souvenir counter behind the church.

Popular Check-in Spot

If you have ever set foot in Domaine De Marie Church, you will surely feel extremely satisfied with the many experiences here. Firstly, you will have many iconic Dalat check-in photos to cherish. At the same time, you will also be able to capture impressions of the architecture, atmosphere, and the surrounding green space.

Domaine De Marie Church is one of the most famous landmarks to explore in Dalat

As it’s the habitat for many beautiful flower species, Domaine De Marie Church attracts numerous tourists who come here to take photos with various types of flowers. However, if you visit this tourist destination in Dalat, you must adhere strictly to the regulations. Running, jumping, playing around, picking flowers, stepping on prohibited areas, and littering are strictly prohibited. If you once set foot in the land of Central Vietnam and visit the ancient town of Hoi An, you will understand why Hoi An is beloved by tourists both domestic and foreign. A self-guided 2-day 1-night trip to Hoi An is an ideal timeframe for you to fully explore the unique beauty of the scenery, culture, and people here.

The best time to go on a self-guided 2-day 1-night trip to Hoi An

What season is best for a 2-day 1-night trip to Hoi An? The climate in Hoi An is distinctly divided into two seasons: rainy season and dry season, each lasting about 6 months in a year. Whenever you visit Hoi An, you will always feel the beauty and unique charm.

Dry season: from January to July

  • February – April: During this time, the weather in Hoi An is very pleasant and cool, making it perfect for traveling. Exploring, having fun, and experiencing any activity is absolutely wonderful during this time.
  • May – July: This is nearing the end of the dry season in Hoi An. If you visit Hoi An during this time, you can go to Cu Lao Cham Island for diving and coral watching.

Rainy season: from August to January of the following year. Based on my travel experience in Hoi An, around October to December, Hoi An will be flooded, and people mainly travel by boat. If you visit the ancient town during this time, you will experience the feeling of floating in a boat through the streets, which is very interesting. However, you have to be “lucky” to witness this scene because even though it rains, the number of days flooded here can be counted on your fingers, then the water will recede very quickly, the sky will be clear again, and the sun will shine yellow.

Your 2-day 1-night itinerary for Hoi An should choose a beautiful, cool timeframe

Note: The 14th lunar day of each month is a wonderful time to visit Hoi An. On the eve of this day, all families in the ancient town of Hoi An will turn off all electric lights and only light lanterns. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to admire a beautiful and mystical scene. Not only that, the festivals and special cultural performances during this time will not disappoint you for coming to Hoi An.

Experience in traveling to Hoi An

Based on my travel experience from Da Nang to Hoi An, you can travel to Hoi An for a self-guided 2-day 1-night trip, which is reasonable. However, if you have time, you should also consider combining sightseeing in Da Nang. Because to get to Hoi An by plane, you will have to fly to Da Nang Airport, and then from there, you can move to the ancient town. Below, I will suggest some common and convenient transportation options for traveling to Hoi An, so you can choose the most suitable one for your travel itinerary!

Getting to Hoi An

Hoi An is located in Quang Nam province and does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is in Da Nang, about 30km away from Hoi An. Currently, many airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, etc., operate flights from various countries to Da Nang.

If you prefer a quick and cost-effective service with door-to-door transfer, you can opt for a private car rental service with a driver in Da Nang. Our drivers will hold a sign with your name at the international airport gate in Da Nang and then take you to Hoi An quickly and safely. Book a private car service from Da Nang to Hoi An today.

Moving around Hoi An

  • Motorbike: This is the ideal choice for those with extensive travel itineraries and destinations that are not close to each other. However, you should note that there are some streets in the ancient town of Hoi An with strict motorbike ban hours to avoid fines.
  • Bicycle: The best way to explore the ancient town is to ride a bicycle to enjoy the cool breeze and experience the peaceful life of the city. Some hotels in Hoi An offer free bicycles for guests, or you can rent one for around 40,000 VND/day.

  • Walking: In the evening, you can stroll along the Hoai River to admire the poetic beauty of Hoi An at night. Based on my travel experience in budget-friendly Hoi An, it’s best to walk to enjoy the scenery, save money, and savor street food.
  • Boat: For an authentic experience of the ancient town, don’t miss the chance to take a boat ride on the Hoai River or Thu Bon River. You can easily catch a boat at the riverbank in the center of the ancient town.

Small alleys in Hoi An Ancient Town

In Hoi An, you’ll encounter small alleys everywhere. These narrow alleys, sometimes only wide enough for one person, stretch endlessly, offering picturesque scenes of Hoi An.

Among the countless cafes in Hoi An, I chose Faifo Coffee – the cafe with the most Instagrammable view in Hoi An to rest in the afternoon. Most visitors come here to take photos on the rooftop, but for me, it’s not just about capturing the picturesque view but also trying out the delicious drinks here.

Cua Dai Beach

After spending the morning exploring the ancient town, in the afternoon, my group decided to drive to Cua Dai Beach. It had been a long time since we had the opportunity to travel, and we all missed the beach, so as soon as we arrived at Cua Dai Beach, we were immediately enchanted by the vast stretches of white sand, walking on the soft sand felt so relaxing. After enjoying a refreshing swim, you can rest and have a light meal at the beachside shelters.

Cua Dai Beach doesn’t offer many entertainment or water sports services like other tourist beaches. Therefore, if you are traveling with family or friends, you can bring some snacks or fruits for a small beach picnic, which can be quite enjoyable.

After a relaxing afternoon by the sea and admiring the breathtaking sunset, we bid farewell to Cua Dai Beach and returned to the ancient town.

Nightlife in Hoi An Ancient Town

The ancient town “perhaps looks the most beautiful at night,” shimmering and mysterious like a painting. Hoi An’s nightlife truly offers many exciting activities!

Strolling around the ancient town at night

Another simple yet fascinating nighttime experience in Hoi An is strolling around the ancient town. The silent and serene ancient streets, adorned with colorful lanterns at night, create a romantic and poetic atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Hoi An.

Walking along the Hoai River and releasing lanterns

The highlight of the ancient town at night is perhaps the banks of the Hoai River. Bach Dang Street, with its golden lights shining from the rows of ancient houses down to the Hoai River, creates a romantic and dreamy scene, becoming a characteristic destination for Hoi An tourism that everyone wants to visit.

Releasing Lanterns on the Hoai River

Experiencing a boat ride and releasing lanterns on the Hoai River is sure to be a memorable experience for you throughout your trip. You can rent a small boat to drift along the Hoai River, quietly admiring the serene and mystical Hoi An at night, while listening to stories about this land from the boatman in the peaceful atmosphere. Moreover, you can also personally release small lanterns, glittering with hopes, dreams, and prayers for health and luck for yourself and your loved ones.

Watching/participating in traditional folk games

To offer visitors more enjoyable experiences during their stay, most night markets or streets like Nguyen Thai Hoc Street will organize various traditional folk games. In the lively atmosphere, you can participate in blindfolded pot smashing, balloon popping, or singing chòi songs… These activities are very meaningful, helping tourists learn more about the folk culture of the people of Hoi An.

Exploring Ha Giang at night always holds a unique allure. While visiting Ha Giang during the day impresses with its rugged, majestic beauty, Ha Giang at night seems even more mysterious. Let’s delve into Ha Giang at night through the activities and entertainment spots that I will share in the following article.

Campfire in Ha Giang at Night

Building a campfire in the evening is a unique cultural activity that you shouldn’t miss when traveling to Ha Giang. The campfire is a time when the spirit of unity soars, everyone gathers around, harmonizing to the same rhythm.

During this time, people will join together to sing characteristic songs of the Northwest region, cheering and having fun. Thanks to this, we can set aside the fatigue and worries of life to enjoy true happiness. Moreover, according to local beliefs, the campfire gathering is also a place for destiny to unite young men and women.

Building a campfire at night is a unique cultural activity that you shouldn’t miss

If your accommodation is a cultural village, a traditional stilt house of the locals, you can suggest to the host to organize a campfire, provided there are at least 10 participants. For those who go camping, you can build a fire at your campsite. While the fire burns, you can chat, exchange cultural experiences, and grill some food to enjoy, such as chicken, sweet potatoes, cassava, etc.

However, for tourists staying in guesthouses or hotels, it might be more challenging because few places offer campfire services. You can ask hotel staff or local residents if there is a suitable area nearby to organize one yourself. The cost will depend on your food and beverage needs, usually ranging from 300,000 to 700,000 VND.

Participating in the Fire Jumping Festival of the Pa Then People

If you travel to Bac Quang, Ha Giang during the Vietnamese lunar New Year or around the harvest season in October or November of the lunar calendar, you will have the opportunity to participate in the unique Fire Jumping Festival of the Pà Thẻn people. The locals believe that the fire jumping ritual expresses gratitude to the heavens, earth, and spiritual beings for bringing them a bountiful harvest season and to pray for luck in the coming year.

The festival consists of two parts: rituals and fire jumping. In the first 30 minutes, the shaman performs rituals to locate the “ghost” and call it to possess the participating young men, who sit opposite the shaman one by one.

Participating in the Fire Jumping Festival of the Pa Then People

The ritual ends when the bodies of the young men start trembling, signaling their strength and courage to jump into the red-hot charcoal. Following the shaman’s signal, each person jumps back and forth closer to the fire and then plunges into the blazing flames. Despite the absence of any protective layers, the feet of these young men remain unscathed and unaffected by burns.

Once the fire dies down and the charcoal is no longer hot, the young men stop jumping, and the shaman conducts a ritual to send off the “fire spirit” and the ghost. Everyone returns to a normal state. Additionally, any brave tourists can also request to participate. So, if you happen to visit Bac Quang, don’t miss out on this unique festival experience.

Gathering around the hearth in the stilt houses of the locals

With the freezing cold climate, sometimes dropping to 0 degrees Celsius in winter, fire plays an essential role for the people of Ha Giang. They see the hearth as a symbol of sturdy manhood, a cornerstone for the whole family. And it’s the women who keep that hearth warm and glowing. Thus, the image of the hearth becomes even more sacred than ever.

Gathering around the hearth in the stilt houses of the locals

You’ve probably heard of the stories of people gathering around the hearth, chatting, and enjoying hot tea. And it’s truly wonderful when you can experience that by choosing to stay at a homestay in the stilt houses of the locals. In winter, the hearth is almost kept burning all day.

Usually, after dinner, the hosts will invite guests to relax, gather around the hearth, and enjoy tea, local snacks like roasted peanuts, and candies. This is the best opportunity for tourists to learn more about the culture and people here through the interesting stories of the hosts.

Exploring Dong Van Ancient Town, Ha Giang at Night

If Dong Van is your evening resting place, don’t forget to explore this beautiful land. In contrast to its ancient charm during the day, Dong Van Ancient Town at night is a space filled with romance, adorned with bright golden lanterns under the cool weather. Perhaps that’s why this place is dubbed a miniature Dalat in Ha Giang.

Visiting Dong Van Ancient Town, tourists will be amazed by its scenery, tinted with the ancient colors of yin and yang-roofed houses. To move around more conveniently, people often rent motorcycles in Dong Van, Ha Giang, before heading to various entertainment spots.

Exploring the Ancient Beauty of Dong Van Old Town

If you have the opportunity to travel to Dong Van on weekends, you can enjoy the specialties of the Northwest people at the Dong Van Ancient Town night market, such as “thắng dền” cakes, “ấu tẩu” porridge, corn wine, bamboo rice, etc. Additionally, at night, the market also offers some fast food items like French fries, sausages, rice paper, etc., suitable for the taste of tourists.

Visiting 26/3 Square in Ha Giang City at Night

You’ve probably heard of the milestone 0 of Ha Giang, a famous check-in spot for tourists when traveling to Ha Giang. Right next to it is the 26/3 Square – the symbol of Ha Giang City with an area of nearly 3000 square meters. Adjacent to it is the picturesque Lo River, a legendary river of the Northeast region.

Visiting 26/3 Square in Ha Giang City at Night

With such a prime location, this place is often the venue for large-scale and important festivals and events of the province. If you visit from September to December, you can participate in the buckwheat flower festival with many activities imbued with the Northwest’s essence.

Therefore, if you’re staying in Ha Giang City at night, be sure to visit 26/3 Square. Additionally, in the evening, there are electric car races at the square with prices starting from only 15,000 VND for 10 minutes. Traveling to Ha Giang with your friends and stopping by here for some fun would definitely be a blast!

Enjoying Drinks at Ha Giang’s Cafes at Night

In the chilly weather, sitting with friends or family, admiring the mountainous scenery, and sipping hot tea is incomparable. Due to the surge in tourist numbers, almost every district in Ha Giang now has cafes. For convenience and economy, it’s advisable to rent a motorbike in Ha Giang for transportation.

The criteria for choosing a cafe in Ha Giang are quality, ambiance, and price. Don’t forget to research beforehand, carefully read reviews on Google and travel websites. Some cafes you can consider are Cafe Núi Cấm, Cafe Cực Bắc, Dong Van Bar, etc.

Exploring Ha Giang’s Night Cuisine

Culinary exploration is undoubtedly an essential part of experiencing Ha Giang at night when traveling. However, only a few places like Ha Giang City or Dong Van Town have restaurants open until late at night. If you’re in other areas, you might want to consider the activities mentioned above!

For those staying overnight in Ha Giang City, you can choose from a variety of options, ranging from “ấu tẩu” porridge, “thắng dền” cakes to snacks, grilled skewers, and fried vegetables. Some famous eateries include Ngan Ha “ấu tẩu” porridge, Mr. Xuan’s snack stall, and 320 Ly Tu Trong grilled food stall.

Enjoying a bowl of piping hot Trang Kim Pho amidst the chilly weather of Ha Giang

As for tourists in Dong Van, you can explore Dong Van Ancient Town while enjoying the local specialties. One place recommended by locals that you should try at least once is Moc Mien Porridge, near the Dong Van gas station. It is renowned for its “ấu tẩu” porridge with a sweet, tender chicken meat, firm chicken feet, and a hint of bitterness from “ấu tẩu” leaves, creating an unforgettable flavor.

The above are my experiences of enjoying Ha Giang at night that I want to share with you all. My advice is that you shouldn’t venture too far or stay out too late to conserve your energy for your trip. I wish you all a wonderful journey! If you’ve ever been to Hue, Vietnam, you will undoubtedly be amazed by the vast tombs adorned with gold leaf paintings and exquisite carvings of the Nguyen kings. For generations, the people of Hue have always valued their graves when it comes to departing for the eternal realm, to entrust both their physical and spiritual selves. Those in their twilight years in Hue will consider finding a piece of land, often in a high and prominent location, to erect tombs for their descendants when they depart to the other world. And to “admire” the most majestic cemetery in Hue, I invite you to join me in An Bang village.

Located about 36 km from the city of Hue, along the coast, there is a famous fishing village that has attracted many visitors for years despite not being a tourist destination. An Bang village, part of Vinh An commune, Phu Vang district, is known as the “city of tombs” or the “ghost city of An Bang” with its “super tombs”. My village borders An Bang village, so every time I accompany my father back to our ancestral home, I have the opportunity to pass by this cemetery. Sometimes I stop for a long time to admire the majestic tombs resembling castles, intricately crafted no less than the royal tombs. Wandering through the narrow paths amidst the vast realm of the “others,” I never feel any sense of creepiness or chilliness; instead, I feel amazed and curious.

This place is considered the most luxurious cemetery in Vietnam, with thousands of tombs of various colors and sizes. Some tomb areas are estimated to be worth billions of Vietnamese dong

Lost in the maze

The An Bang Cemetery spans about 40,000 square meters, stretching towards the sea. To date, there are over a thousand tombs ranging from 40 to 400 square meters, with gates towering up to 7-8 meters high. Even the skilled artisans who specialize in building tombs here cannot recall the exact number. The construction cost for each tomb ranges from hundreds of millions to billions of Vietnamese dong, with some costing nearly tens of billions. Some tombs are built, only to be demolished several years later to construct larger ones, each new construction surpassing the grandeur of its predecessor. Dense and overlapping, closely linked one after another, the tombs in various colors and shapes sprawl across the sandy hills, making one feel as if stepping into a profound and mysterious land.

An Bang village, located in Vinh An commune, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province, is a place known by many as the “City of Tombs” or the “Ghost City.

How to get to the “City of Tombs”?

From the city of Hue, there are two directions to reach An Bang village:

  • Taking National Highway 49: From Hue, follow National Highway 49 towards Thuan An Beach, then continue along the coastal road for about 30 km to Vinh An commune. Upon arrival, you can ask locals for directions to the cemetery.
  • Heading towards Da Nang: From Hue, travel in the direction of Da Nang for approximately 16 km until you reach Thuy Phu commune. At the intersection with Hue bypass road, turn left towards Truong Ha Bridge. After crossing Truong Ha Bridge, turn right into Vinh An commune. From here, you can ask locals for directions to the cemetery.

Additionally, for the convenience of visiting the City of Tombs as well as other famous tourist spots in Hue, a motorbike tour is a perfect choice. With the motorbike tour service in Hue provided by DanangMotorbikeAdventure.com, you can have the best experiences. Diverse Tomb Architecture

The unique feature of the tomb village lies not only in the scale of the tombs but also in the diverse architectural styles ranging from Buddhist, Christian, to Confucian influences… incorporating distinctive architectural features of tombs in Hue, creatively crafted by artisans according to the wishes of the tomb owners.

In the past, the motifs of the four sacred animals like dragon, unicorn, tortoise, and phoenix were reserved only for kings and emperors, but now you can see them on many tombs here. On the stone steps, these mythical creatures exude both majesty and bravery as they guard the tombs. On the pillars, dragons and phoenixes coil and soar as if flying across the deep blue sky.

There are also sentimental landscape paintings. It seems that the living wish to offer the whole world to the departed. These meticulously crafted ceramic tiles, adorned with various colors, are intricately cut and embossed to form images.

The intricate patterns, intricate carvings, are exquisitely detailed

Do you think this is the resting place of the deceased?

With its towering triple gate, panoramic view pavilions, spacious courtyard, and serene rock gardens serving as decorative screens… it’s no different from a noble residence. The closely clustered tombs next to residential houses sometimes make it difficult to distinguish between tombs and shrines.

In addition to this unique cemetery, An Bang also boasts numerous grand ancestral temples. Along the concrete paths weaving through each small neighborhood, it’s easy to come across ancestral temples with closed gates, high walls, only opening during important ancestral anniversaries, and the scent of incense.

Dalat Palace Golf Club – Da Lat golf course ranked among the top 100 most beautiful golf courses in the world

  • Address: No. 2, Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street, Ward 8, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province.
  • Phone: 0263 3821 201

Dalat Palace Golf Club, also known colloquially as the “Hill of Cù Golf Course,” is widely recognized as the first golf course built in Vietnam and has been ranked among the top 100 most beautiful golf courses in the world.

Situated on Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street, adjacent to Dalat University – the most beautiful university in Southeast Asia, the front of the golf course overlooks the tranquil and picturesque Xuan Huong Lake, creating an exceptionally strategic location.

Dalat Palace Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Vietnam

Dalat Palace Golf Club was established during the reign of King Bao Dai. After his abdication, the golf course was abandoned for 40 years, from 1950 to 1990. It was then renovated to international 18-hole standards, gradually becoming the most prestigious golf course in the city of thousands of flowers.

The Hill of Cù Golf Course harmoniously blends lush green grasslands with the serene backdrop of Xuan Huong Lake. Additionally, it features characteristic golf terrains such as rolling hills and challenging hazards, providing a formidable challenge even for seasoned golfers.

The grounds of Dalat Palace Golf Club offer a stunning view of Xuan Huong Lake.

The turf here is meticulously selected, especially the fairways and practice areas, which are made of Bent grass imported from the United States, meeting international competition standards. This ensures smooth and precise ball movement. The golf course premises are also equipped with full facilities including restaurants, hot springs, hotels, and high-end bars to cater to visitors.

The costs at Dalat Palace Golf Club are quite complex. Besides the green fees, which vary according to the number of holes (9 holes, 18 holes, unlimited), players also need to consider additional charges for electric carts, golf clubs, shoes, umbrellas, and practice areas. Therefore, this is a destination for most professional golfers who are willing to pay high fees for quality golf courses and accompanying services.

In addition to the internationally standard golf course, The Dalat 1200 Country Club also built a luxurious resort area, including restaurants, hotels, and high-end villas. Along with these are other recreational activities such as horse riding and tennis courts for players to relax.

However, one thing to note when visiting The Dalat 1200 Country Club is to choose the appropriate time. Due to its high location, the golf course is often covered in dense fog before 10:00 AM. Therefore, it’s best to avoid playing during the midday and afternoon hours for a better experience.

The resort area of The Dalat 1200 Country Club is extremely luxurious with unique designs and state-of-the-art facilities

The fees for golfers visiting the Da Lat 1200 Golf Course vary: approximately 3,110,000 VND for 18 holes (Monday to Friday); 3,590,000 VND for 18 holes (Saturday and Sunday); and 4,040,000 VND for 18 holes (Holidays, New Year).
